Liverpool Win Community Shield

FA Community Shield 2022: Liverpool wins FA Community Shield 2022 – Liverpool edge out Manchester City by a 3-1 margin to win the Community Shield at the King Power Stadium. Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the Reds in front with a fine finish before Julian Alvarez answered on his City debut after a VAR check. Mohamed Salah restored Liverpool’s advantage from the penalty spot following a handball in the box by Ruben Dias. Darwin Nunez then sealed the victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men with a close-range header in stoppage time to open his account for the Reds.

FA Community Shield 2022: Darwin Nunez scored on his competitive debut for the Reds
Liverpool claimed the first English domestic silverware of the season by beating Manchester City at Leicester’s King Power Stadium in Saturday’s Community Shield.
Darwin Núñez scored his first competitive goal for the Reds, while there was also a debut goal for City’s Julián Álvarez.
The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute, when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s curling effort from the edge of the box flicked off the head of Nathan Aké and in off the post.
Erling Haaland had his first sight of goal in the 34th minute but his effort was saved by Adrián, before the Norwegian missed another good chance to score seconds later when he failed to connect properly with Bernardo Silva’s cross.
Both sides introduced new signings from the bench just before the hour mark, with Darwin Núñez on for Liverpool and Julián Álvarez on for City.
Núñez was straight into the action and thought he’d won a penalty when he was brought down by Ederson, but the flag was up for offside.
The Uruguayan then had a brilliant chance in the 64th minute when he was slipped in by Jordan Henderson, but Ederson did well to race off his line and make a save with his face.
Álvarez then had the ball in the net for City when he tucked away a rebound after Adrián had saved to deny Phil Foden. The linesman put his flag up for offside against Foden but after a VAR check, the goal was allowed to stand.
Liverpool were then awarded a penalty when Núñez’s header struck Rúben Dias on the hand. Mohamed Salah stepped up and struck low into the bottom right corner for 2-1.
And with seven minutes of time added on, there was still time for Núñez to get on the scoresheet when he stooped to head home his first competitive Liverpool goal from Andrew Robertson’s knockdown.
Haaland then had a gilt-edged to pull one back for City when Adrián parried Foden’s effort into his path on the edge of the six-yard box, but the striker somehow blazed over with the goal gaping.
