饥饿30

On 22nd and 23rd of August 2009, the Christian Fellowship(CF)of USM Engineering Campus had organized 30 Hour Famine. It has been the first time the activity being held in my campus. The famine was being held at Dewan Utama (DU) of the campus, and we had spent the longest 30 hours of our life in DU. That time, I was joining the famine with two of my coursemates, they are Soon Kheng and Joshua.

Hour Famine was started by Dr Bob Pierce in 1950. He dedicated to help orphans after Korean War in 1950-1953. What the organization do?
Relief - responding to disasters
Development - transforming community
Advocacy - seeking global challenge

At first, we were divided into six groups, with 8 members and 2 guiders in each group.

During the 30 hour period, the organizing committees had prepared us four main challenges so that we won’t feel hungry or sleepy. In challenge 1, there were total of five games included. For the first game, we were required to carry three bottles of five-liter water by using fabric, with three members being eye-covered, and walk across a distance with a lot of shoes as obstacles. The purpose of this game was to let us know that in real world, there are many people walking a distance just to look for water, and they have to walk with bare foot.

In second game, one of the group members being shown a pretty long story and memorize it within limited time, and then tell the story to second group member. The second one passed to the third one, and so on until the eighth one. Finally, the last group member was required to write out the story again. The moral of this game was, in real world, some people have to get knowledge, or pass the messages from one to another by memorizing it, as they don’t even have pencil and paper. In the third game, we were given lots of symbols and guess the meaning. The winners got his rewards. This game want us to know that, those who hardworking will get his rewards, especially in those poor country, as they are forced to think hardworking to stay alive. The fourth game requires us to stick the newspaper on the body and carry it to another location. While on the way, we might get bitten by dog or injured by glasses. The moral was to tell us that, many poor children have to work in garbage to earn for their food, or else they will starve.

In fifth game, we were required to sacrifice our eyes, mouth, hands, or legs for stones so that we can create more pictures. Then, we had to get cross another obstacles, without using the organs that we have sacrificed earlier. It want to tell us that many people sell their organs for money, and if they facing problems in future after donating their organs, there will be no second chance for them. This was a game for us, but not for them.

In second challenge, the campers were being re-divided into different family members, and imagine that disaster was happening, and all of us lost our homes. I was selected to Casiraghi family. Then, we have to build shelters, seek for jobs, looking for food from NGO and non-NGO, and vaccines as well. The moral of this game was let us experience the problems faced by the victims of disasters such as sickness, food, money, child labour, illegal work, and so on. I enjoyed this challenge so much as I had a good experience on that. It was a successful challenge.

The third challenge requires us to fold different diameters of stars according to the requirements of emcees. The emcees kept changing the requirements, making our efforts being wasted. In real life, the boss always changing their requirements, and will not keep their words. It makes those disaster-victim workers have no choice but to follow it, as they need money at that moment. During the challenge, I get frustrated, as I lost my patience to the emcees.

The fourth challenge was an auction, where every group requires making a bet on every requirement being selected. This game wants us to bet for our future, with the resources in our hand. Sometime the victims forced to bet for their future, or else they gain nothing. However, they may lose more things also.

Finally, the winners of the challenges were get rewarded. My group, the Casiraghi family won the second challenge.

Before 30 Hour Famine comes to the end, we were given breads so that we can eat it after the time reach.

This camp meant a lot to me, that’s why I’m writing this post even though the event had past for long time.
